Roadside assistance with USAA covers all of the following:
- Towing services for broken-down vehicles
- Tire changing services, if you have an appropriate spare
- Fuel delivery
- Jump-starts to your battery
- Lockout services
- Winching to pull a stuck vehicle out of mud or snow
With roadside assistance coverage, USAA members will not be charged for any of these services upon receiving them. How does USAA compare to other roadside assistance programs?
When you compare USAA with the other top insurance companies, USAA offers the best roadside services for the lowest annual cost. Like USAA, Progressive and Geico have roadside assistance coverage for low annual rates, but they have much shorter towing distances and will not winch a vehicle out of mud, sand, or snow.
Roadside assistance with Progressive will have your car towed to the nearest repair facility or up to 15 miles. The cost for roadside assistance with Progressive depends on many factors. like accident history and traffic violations, but generally costs $15 to $30 per year.
Similarly, Geico will only tow your vehicle 20 miles or bring it to the nearest certified repair location. Roadside assistance with Geico is $14 annually per car. While inexpensive, Geico does not offer as many services as USAA. Additionally, Geico will not tow your vehicle as far as USAA will. (For more information, read our “Does Geico cover towing?”)
These added services make roadside assistance with USAA a clear choice.
What distance will USAA tow a car with roadside assistance?
USAA towing distance stands apart from other towing services because USAA offers towing services for a larger distance than any other insurance company. USAA will tow a broken-down vehicle up to 50 miles, whereas most other insurance companies will only bring a broken-down car about 25 miles. (For more information, read our “Does Progressive car insurance cover towing of broken-down vehicle?“).
You may have your vehicle towed more than 50 miles, but you will be liable for the extra mileage the towing service provides.
In some cases, USAA will tow your vehicle to the nearest repair shop for assistance with specific issues they may not be able to assist with on the spot. USAA will also tow your car after an auto accident. However, the first step after an car accident is to file an auto claim with them. While discussing the details of the incident with the claims department, you may request assistance with getting your car towed.
Be advised, however, that car insurance premiums can increase after a car accident.
